Laura Lee Kelly is a 43-year-old single mom from Arizona who struggles to make ends meet.
She is a teacher’s assistant at the Whitman Elementary School but her income was not enough to support herself and her 6-year-old daughter. Therefore Kelly was always on the lookout for extra jobs.
At the end of the month when Kelly was left with no money to pay her bills, she did the unthinkable. She decided to prostitute herself for money. Her problem was that she did not have enough money to pay for a babysitter.
Kelly took her daughter over to a local Park, in Arizona where she asked a group of homeless men to keep an eye on her daughter, and handed them a case of beer as payment.Leaving her daughter with strangers is bad enough but to provide the strangers with beer while her 6-year-old is under their care is grossly irresponsible.
Sadly Kelly left her daughter for four hours in the scorching heat withoutany food or water. A concerned passerby called the police when she found the sad young girl sitting alone in the park without water or cover from the heat.
The 43-year-old mother’s trouble wasn’t over as police officers found Kelly with a man. The man told the police that Kelly was prostituting. The mother was arrested and charged with child endangerment and prostitution.
The child was taken away from Kelly and is now in the care of another family member. Kelly was also suspended from her teaching position.
After she was arrested the mother admitted that it was a 'bad idea' to leave her child with the strangers, especially having provided them with alcohol.
